The Military Home Search: Lackland AFB

Because of its numerous military bases, San Antonio seems to be a hub for both active duty military members and retirees. The city is welcoming, family-friendly, and full of culture. At Keller Williams, we want to help make your move to San Antonio as smooth and seamless as possible. We know that finding the right home is very important for a military family, especially considering the frequent moves and constant relocation that you face. We’ve researched the area surrounding several bases in San Antonio and hand-picked several neighborhoods that seem particularly appealing to military families on Lackland Air Force Base.

San Antonio is popularly known as “Military City USA” for good reason. This city is home to Joint Base San Antonio, which is made up of 3 separate military bases: Fort Sam Houston, Randolph AFB, and Lackland AFB. The full base employs over 80,000 people, making it one of the largest in the country. Today, we’re zooming in on Lackland Air Force Base, located just inside the west side of Loop 410. Lackland employs over 45,000 people, almost 25,000 of whom are active duty military members.

Lackland is mostly thought of as a training base, hosting both basic and technical training, among others. In fact, this base is the sole location for U.S. Air Force enlisted Basic Military Training, Active Duty Air Force, Air Force Reserve, and Air National Guard. Lackland is also home to six technical training squadrons! Lackland AFB is comprised of: the 37th Training Wing, National Guard 149th Fighter Wing, the 59th Medical Wing, the Air Force Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance Agency, the 24th Air Force Wing, and more.

Since this base has such a focus on military training, you might assume that the demographics are dominated by single males...however, Lackland is actually a hub for military families! This base is mainly made up of family units, and the average family size is 4. Though military housing is available on base, many families desire their own home in a more “normal” neighborhood...however, this often means a long commute. So what if you want to live off base, but you don’t want to drive too far? We’ve found some nearby neighborhoods that are perfect for military families like you!
