One of the greatest benefits of living in San Antonio is the variety of “things” to see and do. In fact, there are so many San Antonio attractions and events on any given weekend that it can seem overwhelming to choose just one. In this series, all pressure is off! Ten fun things to do in San Antonio will be chosen each week to make researching for the next Friday celebration, date night, or family outing a little more simple. Specifically, during this time, we’re here to make your holiday season more exciting with plenty of activities that are sure to spread holiday cheer!
- 1. Rock and Run (or Cheer Someone On!)
It’s time to work off that Thanksgiving turkey! The annual Rock ‘n’ Roll Half Marathon is happening this weekend here in town. The course of the run will take you winding through downtown San Antonio, allowing you to take in the beautiful scenery and culture that makes the city so unique. After you run, you’ll get to enjoy a fun festival with food, beer, and a rock n’ roll concert! Whether you’re going as a serious runner with a goal to beat your time, you just want to go run the city as a form of exciting exercise, or you are cheering someone else on, this half marathon is a social experience and welcomes runners of all backgrounds. Online registration is now closed, however, registration will be available for the Marathon, Half Marathon, Relay and 5K at the Health & Fitness Expo on Friday, December 2 and Saturday, December 3. There will be NO race day registrations available!

- 2. Grab a Tamale
It’s time for the 7th annual Tamales Holiday Festival at the Pearl! This delicious festival features over 40 tamale makers, each with unique tamales for you to taste and try. The festival will have live music, several performance, and activities for the little ones, and of course, food and drinks. Walk around the Pearl for a stroll and enjoy the many different tamales that will be featured throughout the day. Your taste buds will be thanking you by the end of the day! It’s a free event—all you need is cash for the different food stations!

- 3. Get a New View at the Zoo
Celebrate the holidays at the San Antonio Zoo with Zoo Lights! This family friendly event happens at night as the zoo transforms itself into a dazzling holiday wonderland. This zoo tradition has been going on in the city for years and really sets the ambiance for the season as guests can ice skate, roast s’mores, sip hot chocolate, and even go for a camel ride! All the while, you’ll enjoy the magnificent lights that bring a whole new perspective to the zoo we all know and love. If you don’t make it out this weekend, the lights will be up until January 1 for you and your family to enjoy!

- 4. Let Your Holiday Bloom
Looking for a way to entertain out of town family or friends? Look no further than a trip to the San Antonio Botanical Garden for their Holidays In Bloom event. Stroll through the garden for an unforgettable afternoon as you look at the gorgeous scenery of poinsettias, a giant Christmas tree, wreaths, and other seasonal plants that will make you full with spirit. The red bows and greenery will have you thinking of Christmas in no time! It’s the perfect outing if you’re looking to enjoy the fresh outdoor air and get in the Christmas spirit.

- 5. See a Classic
Everyone knows the classic tale of A Christmas Carol. Watch as the play comes to life through Playhouse San Antonio. The ghost of Christmas past, present, and future will have you contemplating life and appreciating its little moments. It’s a great way to put your mind and heart in the spirit of Christmas and is a play that the whole family can enjoy. Don’t be a Scrooge! Grab a ticket for this weekend and if you can’t make it, the play runs until December 19.

- 6. Keep Calm
If you’re looking for a more unique play to see this holiday season, snag a ticket for All Is Calm. This Christmas play, set in 1914, tells the story of a German soldier and the Christmas Eve truce between opposing sides during WWI. The story centers around the themes of camaraderie, peace, and loyalty. Based off of true events, All Is Calm isn’t your typical holiday play. With stunning musical numbers and a powerful message, this piece honors those who have served their nation.

- 7. Shop for a Gift
Hecho a Mano, meaning made by hand, is a three-day shopping event in downtown San Antonio. The beautiful market will feature handmade items, both contemporary and traditional. Artists have been working hard on their inventory so that you can find the most perfect and unique gift for that special someone. There will be ornaments, crafts, jewelry, pottery, and more during this shopping extravaganza. It’s a community event that offers a diverse experience for all shoppers. You can attend all weekend long!

- 8. Bring Your Furry Friend
San Antonio has been lucky in having a mild winter thus far. With temperatures staying in the sixties this weekend, enjoy the weather by taking your dog out for a stroll in the San Antonio Botanical Garden. This weekend marks one of four dog friendly weekends at the garden. You’ll get to enjoy all of the seasonal plants and flowers as you take your furry friend for a little holiday walk. They’ll appreciate the exercise and you’ll appreciate the beauty and the fresh air.

- 9. Tour a Historic Home
Tour one of the historic homes in the King William district of town this weekend! This Saturday is the Holiday Home Tour & Fair! You can take a tour through five homes, each one unique and decorated for the holidays. The home tour gives you a glimpse into the rich history of each house and afterwards, there will be food vendors and holiday ornaments for sale. Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity to walk inside the homes!

- 10. Make Art
Head on over to the San Antonio Museum of Art for an afternoon of fun, shopping, art, and music! The day will feature holiday shopping from local San Antonio artists.
