Ten Things to Do in San Antonio This Weekend (Dec.18-20)

One of San Antonio’s greatest upsides is the variety of “things” to see and do at any given time. This weekend is no exception as a variety of different events take place in and around the city. No effort is needed, ten of the best fun things to do in San Antonio this weekend are already described below. Hopefully this list will make researching for this weekend’s Friday celebration, date night, or family outing a little more simple.

1. Travel to a Galaxy Far, Far Away

The seventh installment in the Star Wars franchise, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has had Star Wars fans buzzing for months. The Franchise has waited ten years to introduce the newest piece of the puzzle and the world has taken notice. Tickets for opening night sold quickly throughout the city, but you may be able to get your hands on a ticket some other time this weekend if you act quickly! San Antonio boasts numerous top-flight movie theaters, meaning if you strike out you can try again! Try The Palladium, The Quarry, Northwoods and The Alamo Drafthouse for starters!

2. Rock Out with Trans-Siberian Orchestra

A holiday classic for younger generations, Trans Siberian Orchestra has produced many iconic modern holiday songs. Featuring a range of instruments including a string section, and raging electric guitars, Trans-Siberian Orchestra puts a youthful twist on classic Christmas Carols. Coupled with incredible lights and special effects, this is a Christmas show in the version of a rock concert. From O Come All Ye Faithful to Christmas Eve Sarajevo 12/24, everyone is sure to know at least one song at this show!

3. Sing Along at The Book of Mormon

From the creators of South Park and co-composer of Frozen comes this edgy and moderately offensive Broadway tale. Meant to be lighthearted and in good fun, The Book of Mormon is s show full of comedy and musical numbers alike. Audiences around the country have enjoyed the show since it opened in 2011 and it is now completing a second U.S. tour. This weekend the Majestic Theatre plays host to the show that has won nine Tony Awards and a Grammy. While this may be a good opportunity to leave the kids at home, there is now doubt you will be falling out of your seat by the end!

4. Dance the Night Away with Josh Abbott Band

One of the most popular young acts in Country Music, Josh Abbott has made a name for himself with authentic Texas tunes. Writing about everything from young love to Texas destinations, Josh Abbot Band has connected with Texans across the state, and has even broken onto the national scene. Hits like “She’s Like Texas” and “Oh Tonight” have made their way onto the airwaves across the country. This weekend Josh Abbott band plays Cowboy’s Dance Hall, guaranteeing both a good show and great opportunity to two-step!

5. Watch Scrooge Transform on the Riverwalk

A decade long tradition, Scrooge makes his way back to the San Antonio Riverwalk this Saturday. Performing at the Arneson River Theatre, Award–winning actor Damian Gillen presents Bah Humbug! A One-Man Christmas Carol. Gillen will present Charles Dickens’ famous Christmas Story in incredibly impressive fashion with special effects, traditional Christmas Carols, and plenty of costume changes! Join Scrooge on the Riverwalk for a great show!

6. See San Antonio’s Lights by Helicopter

7. Watch a Concert in a Cave

While Natural Bridge Caverns may be the most visited cave in the area, the San Antonio area is home to more than one incredible geological wonder. The Cave Without a Name in Boerne sits at the top with Natural Bridge as the most awe-inspiring in the region. The cave features incredible stalactite and stalagmite formations, along with truly incredible acoustics. This weekend, the cave’s sound quality will be shown off with the Winter Solstice Concert. The concert features musicians using vocals and instruments to expose just how incredible the cave can sound!

8. Check Out OPEN Holiday Market

What’s a holiday season weekend without a good market? This week our pick is the OPEN Holiday Market. OPEN is quite different than most holiday markets though, as it is a collaboration between the city of San Antonio, local retailers, and local property owners. Four vacant downtown storefronts will be given new life as they are filled with local artisan gifts and entrepreneurs. Be sure to stop by and check out this unique event before it closes Saturday, it’s sure to be worth the time!

9. Visit Zoo Lights Holiday Nights

This weekend see a completely different side of the San Antonio Zoo! This year is the inaugural year of “Zoo Lights-Holiday Nights”. The Zoo converts after dark into a colorful and bright holiday experience. The passageways leading around the Zoo are transformed into different themes based on the animals living in the Zoo! Not only that, but the experience will also include snow flurries, and the opportunity to ride the carousel, meet Santa, and roast s’mores! Don’t miss out on the San Antonio Zoo’s newest holiday attraction!

10. Shop for a Cause with Big Brothers Big Sisters

Do your kids always want to do their own Christmas shopping but are never quite able to manage on their own? This weekend Big Brothers Big Sisters will host “From Me To You” with the aim of solving that problem while raising money to solve others.
