Ten Things to Do in San Antonio This Weekend (Dec. 11-13)

One of San Antonio’s greatest upsides is the variety of “things” to see and do at any given time. This weekend is no exception as a variety of different events take place in and around the city. No effort is needed, ten of the best fun things to do in San Antonio this weekend are already described below. Hopefully this list will make researching for this weekend’s Friday celebration, date night, or family outing a little more simple.

1. Watch the Spurs take on Kobe One Last Time

This weekend marks the first of two opportunities to witness one of the great NBA rivalries of the past twenty years as the Los Angeles Lakers take on the hometown Spurs. Since he announced his impending retirement, this season has turned into a de-facto farewell tour for Kobe Bryant. While most Spurs fans do not hold fond memories of Kobe’s exploits at the AT&T Center, there’s something to be said for getting to see him play one last time. It’s always special when two all-time greats like Kobe and Tim Duncan play against each other.

2. ReDo Recess Winter Edition at The DoSeum

Do you ever miss simpler times when recess was the highlight of the day? This weekend it still can be! The DoSeum is San Antonio’s new spin on a classic children’s museum and offers a variety of intriguing and interactive exhibits and activities. This Friday marks the newest installment of the museum’s “ReDo Recess” series: Winter Wonderland Happy Hour. Friday night the DoSeum will become an adult only area, inviting adults from around the city to check out the exhibits, do karaoke, and take a picture with Santa while also offering adult beverages and food. There will even be an ugly sweater contest! Take your chance to check out the DoSeum!

3. Celebrate Great Music and Tidings with Brian Setzer Orchestra

Generally regarded of one of the best guitarists of our time, Brian Setzer has been entertaining crowds for decades. Recently, the Brian Setzer Orchestra released “Rockin’ Rudolph” which comes as their first studio Christmas album in the past decade. This weekend the band will be live at the Majestic Theatre playing hits both new and old, and providing sounds that will both impress and prepare the audience for the holidays.

4. Experience a Live Boxing Match

Have you always wanted to see a boxing match in person? It’s not every day that you can take in a marquee boxing live, much less without making a trip to Las Vegas or New York. This weekend San Antonio plays host to the NBC sponsored “Premier Boxing Champions”. The match features two current stars in the sport, the undefeated Omar Figuerora and former World Champion Antonio Demarco. The event will be televised during primetime on NBC and is sure to be a smash for all who attend!

When: Saturday, Doors open at 3pm, fight begins at 7:30pm.

5. Taste Your Way Through The San Antonio Coffee Festival

For most folks coffee is as much a beverage as a way of life. So much so that consumers occasionally forget to enjoy and celebrate unique flavors and benefits of coffee. That’s not the case this weekend as the San Antonio Coffee Festival makes its annual appearance in the countdown city. The event will offer the opportunity to learn about coffee and taste test roasted coffee from around the world while meeting local coffee artisans. Everyone who attends is sure to get a kick out of the San Antonio Coffee Festival!

6. Get Jazzy with Christian Scott

One of the foremost names in jazz, and specifically in the trumpet, Christian Scott performs this weekend at the Tobin Center for the performing Arts. Christian is a Grammy-nominated Trumpeter, composer, and producer. Christian is a native of New Orleans and has jazz in the blood as he is the nephew of Donald Harrison, Jr. who is famous for a lengthy jazz career on the saxophone. Christian and others will bring their innovative ‘stretch music’ to the Tobin and are sure to impress!

7. Check out The Riverwalk Winter Arts and Craft Show

The Riverwalk is a festive location to visit during any season, but especially during the holiday season. Apart from the beautiful lights and decorations, and the nightly carolers traveling up and down the river. The Riverwalk also hosts the Winter Arts & Craft Show this weekend. The show will feature a variety of different artists and vendors selling everything from jewelry to fine art. Be sure to make a trip to the Riverwalk this weekend and stop by!

8. Go Stargazing with Texas Public Radio

As the famous song goes, “the stars at night are big and bright deep in the heart of Texas”. This weekend you have your chance to gaze at those big bright stars with the help of professionals. The San Antonio Astronomical Association will help host Stargazing with Texas Public Radio at Mitchell Lake along with Texas Public Radio. The Astronomical Association will have telescopes set up for the whole family and will help direct viewers to different stars and constellations. Bring the whole family out to gaze at the wonders of the universe!

9. Take A Very Merry Little Holiday Tour of Villa Finale

Villa Finale is one of the most historical and recognizable homes in the San Antonio area. Located in the King William District, Villa Finale was built in 1876 and now serves as a museum and gardens. The Villa opens to the public this weekend fully decorated for the holidays. Stepping into the decorated home is like stepping back in time. The house contains various decorations, a huge Christmas tree, and the usual beautiful architecture. To sweeten the deal, guests will also be offered hot cider and holiday cookies!

When: Saturday from 12pm to 4pm.

10. Participate in The Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis

Did you hear the high temperature this weekend is going to be in the 70’s? Take advantage of the mild temperatures and come out to Valero Energy to support a great cause. The Jingle Bell Run/Walk for Arthritis consists of races across the United States including one this weekend in San Antonio. Apart from spending time outside and exercising, the event supports a great cause. Lace up your shoes, throw on your holiday costume, and come out for a run!
