San Antonio’s Most Dog-Friendly Neighborhoods

Local dog owners will be delighted to learn that San Antonio has plenty of dog-friendly parks, trails and special events that make living and playing with your dog just plain fun!

While there are many areas of San Antonio that are dog-friendly, the Downtown area takes the cake. Considering that the entire River Walk is friendly to dogs on leashes, it’s easy to spend the day strolling along the meandering San Antonio River with your dog by your side. Additionally, you can bring your dog to trot along with you as you discover the trails at Brackenridge Park, explore the local offerings at The Pearl Brewery’s weekly farmer’s market, peruse historic El Mercado and La Villita, or let loose at Madison Square Dog Park. When hunger strikes, dog-friendly eateries abound in the downtown area. With many condo developments, such as the Cevallos Lofts and La Vistana welcoming pets, it’s no longer a burden to find a space that allows both of you. If a condo isn’t your thing, several downtown area neighborhoods, such as King William, Monte Vista, and Southtown, offer single-family housing, putting you far enough away to have a yard, but close enough to the center of town to enjoy the amenities.

North Side

With 17 dog-friendly restaurants, over two dozen veterinarians, including the 24-hour specialty and critical care emergency hospital, VREC, and numerous pet boutiques and supply stores, San Antonio's Northside is a prime choice for pet owners. The north side also features two of the best dog parks in the city: Hardberger and McAllister parks. Close to the neighboring subdivisions of Deerfield, Summerfield, Churchill Estates, and Vista Del Norte, Hardberger Park campuses two separate, enclosed dog parks on site. Down the road, McAllister Park offers a dog park and walking trails while playing host to the annual Fest of Tails festivals; an event that showcases food, live music, arts and crafts, and a sky full of kites, while welcoming dogs of all breeds and sizes. With the neighborhoods of Oak Hollow Park, Santa Fe Trails, and Bluff Creek, man’s best friend will not only have a park to play at, he’ll also have a yard to romp around in.

Alamo Heights

Though small in size, Alamo Heights is saturated with dog lovers, as shown by the number of amenities for dogs. Home to pet boutiques Fifi & Fido and Pet Works (rated the number one and number five pet boutiques in San Antonio), it is clear that Alamo Heights dog owners enjoy pampering their pets. Additionally, the incorporated city provides nine restaurants, 18 veterinarians, six pet supply stores, and one Chihuahua group for its dog-owning residents. While many of the homes you will find to accommodate you and your dog are single family homes, condominiums and high-rise buildings, such as 200 Patterson Ave., The Broadway, The Carlyle, and The Barcelona offer a luxurious condo lifestyle for you and your pup.

With over 70 dog-friendly restaurants and six dedicated dog parks, there are many areas of San Antonio that prove to be an excellent place for dog lovers!
