How a Legendary Architect Inspired This Extraordinary Sonterra Home

“The good building is not one that hurts the landscape, but one which makes the landscape more beautiful than it was before the building was built.” - Frank Lloyd Wright

An iconic American architect in the early to mid-twentieth century, Frank Lloyd Wright was a visionary artist whose stunning work infused practical living with thoughtful elegance. And though most of his original structures are located in Illinois, Wisconsin, and New York, many designers and builders across the world have since sought to emulate his extraordinary creations in their own cities.

Among these ambitious creatives, Steve Heflin (a renowned local architect and President of the Greater San Antonio Builders Association) was inspired by “the greatest American architect of all time” when he designed 18918 De Enclave, a $1.8 Million estate in Sonterra Enclave.

Keeping in step with Wright’s “Prairie School” movement, this beautiful home is marked by layered horizontal lines and flat roofs with broad overhanging eaves. These silhouettes were thought to imitate the wide-open spaces of the native prairie (a landscape also reminiscent of Texas’ wide-open spaces).

Continuing in the tradition of excellence, this home was completely gutted and remodeled in 2016, employing the work of master craftsmen for the finished product. The interior (an expansive 7,683 square feet) is spread out over an extremely open floor plan, a definitive characteristic of Wright’s work as well (a reaction, many believe, to the closed-in architecture of the Victorian era).

The entire interior of 18918 De Enclave boats a refined sense of elegance (thanks to high-end designer finishes). From gorgeous tile to unique ceiling details, the common spaces abound with unique custom touches. And, in case one wasn’t enough, this home offers two kitchens: one standard and one for catering.

Frank Lloyd Wright once famously said, “Space is the breath of art,” a statement seen in abundance within 18918 De Enclave’s generous floor plan. Hardly confined to common spaces, bathrooms and bedrooms also boast this sort of elegant simplicity. We especially love the bright white master bathroom (with vanities and statement light fixtures).

With a master suite on the main floor, four bedrooms and an office upstairs, and an additional apartment over the four-car garage, this home displays “a finer sense of comfort” in which residents and guests can find peace and privacy.

Also an important aspect of Wright’s work, 18918 De Enclave employs a design that fits in harmoniously with the surrounding North San Antonio landscape. He believed that “A building should appear to grow easily from its site and be shaped to harmonize with its surroundings.” Enjoy the unbelievable views from Pella windows or one of the three upstairs balconies,
