25 Fun Things to do in San Antonio: March 2018 Edition

As a city of well over a million people (and growing!), San Antonio is constantly buzzing with activity. From new local businesses to colorful festivals and live music events, it seems there’s always “something to do” in the Alamo City. But just how do you choose the right ones to put on your calendar? That’s where we come in! As a group of San Antonio experts, we’ve curated a list of events worth checking out in the San Antonio area. Take time to read and explore all of the many options for the month of March!

1. Become An Action Star

The DoSeum has opened its doors for a new exhibit: Run, Jump, Fly! This exciting event allows kids to “train” as a San Antonio Action Star. With an exercise focus, kids will build their skill set in balance and movement and will sharpen their minds and bodies together. With yoga, climbing, surfing, and more, this fun exhibit vows to keep kids occupied and busy, all while exercising and learning healthy habits for life.

2. Take A Spring Break At SeaWorld

Leave it to SeaWorld San Antonio to create a fun-filled spring break for you and your kids! For three weekends in the month of March (as well as the entire week of March 12-18), you’ll have the opportunity to see more at Sea World, including special hosts and celebrity wildlife experts. These experts will lead exciting and educational classes about animals and allow your kids to explore the amazing wonders of the animal kingdom. Find a time during spring break to take your little ones and enjoy what SeaWorld has to offer!

3. Appreciate Contemporary Art

March is “Contemporary Art Month” in San Antonio! For the next 31 days, residents and visitors will have the opportunity to celebrate through several different events, including pop up art shops, discussions over artwork, exhibitions, marketplaces, creative workshops, and more. 4. Enjoy An Alamo Experience

To commemorate the Battle of the Alamo, the city of San Antonio will screen a film adaptation of the battle in the beautiful Alamo Gardens. Refreshments will be available!

5. Sing Along To La La Land

The musical movie phenomenon La La Land first premiered in 2016. Now, the San Antonio Symphony is bringing it to life through a live symphony orchestra concert! If you loved the songs and tunes of the musical, this event is perfect for you. Along with a screening of the movie, you’ll get to hear the orchestra perform the songs live, and we’re sure that you won’t be the only one singing along to the catchy and memorable melodies.

6. Play In The Garden

The San Antonio Botanical Garden just upgraded their Nature Play area! Now, kids can enjoy fifteen fun spaces that help to encourage unstructured play and exploration. Run through a maze, cool off in the fountain, pack a picnic, and socialize with other young families in this new space. You can also grab a bite to eat at the new Rosella restaurant in the garden. This exciting upgrade will debut with a ribbon-cutting ceremony this month, so make sure to mark it on your calendars!

7. Experience San Antonio’s Music Festival

Festival season is upon us and this year, and San Antonio is offering its first major music festival! Catering to a wide variety of music tastes, the Botanica festival will also include more than just music performances and concerts. Enjoy food, dancing, art, and even drone racing! The best part? Botanica’s location is at Six Flags Fiesta Texas! Your ticket purchase will also include admission to the park, so you’re guaranteed plenty to see and do.

8. Understand The Legend Of The Bluebonnet

The Legend of the Bluebonnet, a famous book by Tomie DePaola, will be retold in the form of a contemporary ballet the first weekend in March! The story tells of an Indian legend and how one little girl makes a sacrifice to Mother Earth that ultimately results in our famous Texas bluebonnet. Set to gorgeous music and memorable choreography, the ballet will leave you breathless and mesmerized.

9. Run Around The Alamo

Stretch your legs this weekend and head outside for the annual “Run the Alamo” event! With multiple distance options (the full marathon, half, and the 3.1 doughnut dash run), this is a fun event for anyone looking to practice their running skills. The event will take place at Hemisfair Park, stretching all the way to the Alamo. Plus, don’t forget about the awesome meal and party provided after the run!

10. Get Inspired By American Music

The American Brass Quintet is known as one of the nation’s premier chamber music ensembles, bringing music to life in an almost poetic experience for the listener. The group will make its way to San Antonio in honor of our tricentennial birthday. Additionally, the group has written a special poem as a gift to the city, to be given at their premiere. You definitely don’t want to miss this memorable and honorable experience for San Antonio!

11. Celebrate San Antonio

Celebrate our city’s 300th birthday this month with a free concert on March 4th. Enjoy a musical tribute to the Alamo City and relish in the rich culture that makes us who we are as San Antonio residents. This event is free, so make sure to bring a friend!

12. Enjoy An Outdoor Meal

With spring upon us, it’s time to start changing up your dinner menu to make room for new seasonal fruits and veggies.San Antonio Botanical Garden invites you to come out and enjoy a new spring menu, inspired by their garden! Chef Dave Terrazas will prepare a four-course meal, charcuterie board, and wine reception. Enjoy the meal outside, under the Texas stars.

13. Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day

Join Bud Light as they celebrate St. Patrick’s Day on the (green) river of downtown San Antonio! Green beer will be sold to heighten the spirit of St. Patty’s Day, and festival entertainment is sure to keep you occupied. Enjoy face painting, Irish food, a photo booth, music, and so much more. This event has historical significance in San Antonio and has been going on since 1968! Come out and celebrate the luck of the Irish!

14. Witness Gloria Estefan’s Story

Gloria Estefan is a world-renowned Latina music icon. She hails from Cuba, and her story is not one to be missed. Now, the Majestic Theatre presents her life story and musical: On Your Feet! This Tony-Award-winning musical gives you an inside look at Estefan and her husband, how they ended up in America, where they came from, and how her music brought her stardom. This inspiring story will have you captivated the entire time, and you’ll love the live performance of the music.

15. Shop St. Patty’s Day

Looking for more St. Patrick’s Day fun? After you check out the Bud Light event, be sure to take a stroll down the river walk to encounter hundreds of artisan handmade items for sale. Shop around and find beautiful pottery, jewelry, handmade woodwork, paintings, and so much more! This is a great way to support local artists and business owners so make sure to take some time to shop.

16. Enjoy Breakfast With The Easter Bunny

Easter is at the tail end of March, but it will be here before we know it! Thankfully, Dave and Buster’s is offering their annual Breakfast with the Easter Bunny event. The breakfast package includes a buffet, $10.00 power card for games, an Easter egg hunt, pictures, and other Easter activities. 17. Come Together For A FIESTAval

The Family FIESTAval event is a unique part of Fiesta that brings awareness for those with disabilities and how they contribute to our special community. Join in for food trucks, games, entertainment, fiesta décor, and an uplifting atmosphere that is sure to put a smile on your face.

18. Taste The Flavors Of San Antonio

San Antoni o Flavor is an event that allows you to sample small bites and drinks from local restaurants in the area. Enjoy signature cocktails, delicious hors-d'oeuvres, live music, and beautiful artwork. This charitable evening will benefit Culinaria to help empower the food scene of San Antonio.

19. Challenge Yourself To Cook

Ready for a challenge? March 25 marks the 9th annual Paella Challenge. If you aren’t familiar with paella, it is a rice dish that originates from Spain. This quintessential dish is filled with flavor, and now you have the opportunity to taste them all (or create your very own!). Come out for a day of food, wine, music, and more at Mission County Park. All of the proceeds from the event will go to the Culinary Institute of America in order to assist and support local food programs here in San Antonio.

20. See The New Fashion Trends

Are you a lover of fashion? Fashion Week San Antonio is happening at the end of the month! This is an amazing opportunity to celebrate the culture of fashion and see some of the newest trends from designers and retailers. All of the clothes showcased will be for Spring and Summer 2018, giving you an early look to the best new pieces and trends. Get ready for the runway show that is sure to leave you feeling inspired!

21. Listen For Keys In The Wind

Keys In The Wind is a beautiful performance by SoundMind, joined by Svetlana Smolina, where they explore the many capabilities of wind instruments through their recital. The piece has received numerous awards and will be playing at the gorgeous San Fernando Cathedral here in town. If you’re a classical music fan, this event is perfect for you to attend and enjoy!

22. See Something New In Brackenridge Park

You’re probably familiar with Brackenridge Park, but did you know about the new sculpture garden right next door?Miraflo res is being unveiled this month for public use! Festivities begin with a cocktail reception at sunset, then a seated dinner. Proceeds will go to the park itself so that San Antonio can continue to have beautiful spots around town.

23. Sketch Your Own Art

Mary Bonner is a well-known artist in South Texas, known for capturing beautiful and picturesque subjects around San Antonio and the surrounding areas. Come to the Mc Nay to learn about her art technique, see her prints, and try your own hand at sketching.

24. Cheer For The Final Four

March Madness is upon us, and this year, San Antonio has the privilege of hosting the epic NCAA Final Four game! There will be multiple events connected with the Final Four game, so be sure to check out the site for a look at everything that you can expect.

25. Score A Goal At The Championship

Calling all soccer fans: The World Collegiate Soccer Championship will be held in San Antonio this year! The championship will feature eight different teams at two different venues: Comalander Stadium and Heroes Stadium.
