10 Fun Things to Do in San Antonio: May 2018 Edition

As a city of well over a million people (and growing!), San Antonio is constantly buzzing with activity. From new local businesses to colorful festivals and live music events, it seems there’s always “something to do” in the Alamo City.

But just how do you choose the right ones to put on your calendar? That’s where we come in! As a group of San Antonio experts, we’ve curated a list of events worth checking out in the San Antonio area. Take time to read and explore all of the many options for the month of May!

1. Celebrate San Antonio’s Tricentennial

From music-and-dance performances to gallery openings to festival happenings, San Antonio’s Tricentennial Commemorative Week will be packed to the brim with celebratory full-city events. Click here to see the full event schedule or to volunteer for community service projects.

2. Sing Along to “The Book of Mormon”

There’s still time! The nine-time Tony-Award-winning musical “The Book of Mormon” will be in San Antonio at the Majestic Theatre the first week of May...and tickets are still available! Named “the best musical of the century” by The New York Times, this play follows the misadventures of a pair of Mormon missionaries.

3. Watch a Flick Filmed in SA

To celebrate San Antonio’s 300th birthday, Texas Public Radio has partnered with the San Antonio Film Commission and Slab Cinema to present the “Made in S.A.” Film series: six free outdoor screenings of films shot in San Antonio, at (or very nearby!) their actual filming locations. From the silent era to modern times, come see some of the movies that show off San Antonio on the big screen. The series will also host a brief presentation on each film’s association with the Alamo City. Screenings this month include Selena, The Sugarland Express, and Go Down Death. (Showtimes are at dusk, depending on sunset each day.)

4. Get Creative for Mother’s Day

Looking for a fun idea to do with mom this Mother’s Day? The San Antonio Artists Collective is putting on a fun and relaxing night of painting! No experience required, but sign up now because limited space is available. Supplies are included, but BYOB!

5. Listen to the Sounds of the Tejano Conjunto Festival

Hosted annually by San Antonio’s Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, the Tejano Conjunto Festival is a colorful local favorite that shows off the talent and prowess of musicians, dancers, and artists with Latino heritage. The festival will feature Conjunto Hall of Fame award winners and other national and international conjunto musicians. Don’t miss the live performances in Rosedale Park by more than 20 of the best musical groups from traditional Conjunto to progressive Tejano! 3-Day Passes are $30 pre-sale and will be $40 after May 4, while Rosedale Park tickets will be $15 per day.

6. Show Your Support at the Armed Forces River Parade

This month, on Armed Forces Day (May 19th), the River Walk will prove just how much San Antonio loves its military population with the Armed Forces River Parade. Starting at 5:00 PM, over 25 elaborate floats will make their way down the River Walk, themed according to various branches of service, veterans of recent conflicts, military support groups, and more. As one of the largest parades held on the River Walk, the parade will be televised (and re-played for the Fourth of July)!

7. Stroll Among the Flora with a Brew

This is not your average beer garden! The San Antonio Botanical Garden is throwing its 12th semiannual Brews and Blooms event this month for patrons 21 and older. Craft brews, food booths, live music, and adult games will be provided for you to enjoy while you peruse the gorgeous flora.

8. Sip & Savor at the Culinaria Wine & Food Festival

Perhaps the most delectable event of the month, Culinaria’s Wine & Food Festival seeks to celebrate San Antonio as a premier wine and food destination, highlighting the city’s importance as a culinary and cultural gateway to Mexico and Latin America. Plus, all of San Antonio’s best chefs (and biggest stars) will all be in one place showing off their skills.

9. Relax at an Outdoor Yoga Session

The San Antonio Botanical Garden invites yogis of all levels to come practice meditation and motion together outdoors. Remember to bring your own mat!

10. Try Something New at a Food Truck Festival

Some of the best local San Antonio food trucks will be gathering for the Eastside Food Truck Festival this month! Any and all genres and styles of food will be represented, so come hungry and bring friends so you can share plates and get a wide taste of all the festival has to offer, from Mexican to Creole to Mediterranean fare.
