10 Fun Things to Do in San Antonio: July 2018 Edition

As a city of well over a million people (and growing!), San Antonio is constantly buzzing with activity. From new local businesses to colorful festivals and live music events, it seems there’s always “something to do” in the Alamo City.

But just how do you choose the right ones to put on your calendar? That’s where we come in! As a group of San Antonio experts, we’ve curated a list of events worth checking out in the San Antonio area. Take time to read and explore all of the many options for the month of July!

1. Cheer For Your Team

The world’s most beloved sport of soccer is culminating in an international showdown of glory: the World Cup. It happens only every four years, and fans love to make these summers electric. Check out this list of excellent bars to find the one for you!

2. Celebrate Independence Day at the Alamo

This Independence Day, the Alamo is hosting a free event on July 4th! Bring the whole family to take photos, see reenactments, hear a reading of the Declaration of Independence, and eat paletas!

When: Wednesday, July 4th, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Where: The Alamo, 300 Alamo Plaza

3. Watch Fireworks at the Botanical Gardens

Need a place to watch the fireworks on the 4th of July? The San Antonio Botanical Garden is the perfect spot to spend with your friends and family with a picnic and a fireworks show to celebrate our long history of independence. General Admission is $12, and parking is free!

When: Wednesday, July 4th, 6:30 PM - 10:00 PM

4. Support Indie Filmmaking

The 40th Annual CineFestival is being put on this month by the San Antonio Film Commission and is hosted at the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. The theme this year is “Hecho en Tejas” and over 50 films have been submitted by Latino artists, including San Antonio locals.

When: Thursday-Sunday, July 5-8

5. See a Movie Outdoors

Looking for something to do with the kids at night? The Outdoor Movie Series is a great bet! On Saturday, July 7th, a screening of Lego Batman will take place at the Mission Marquee Plaza. Bring chairs, blankets, snacks - anything you might need and watch a movie as the sun sets on another summer day.

6. Listen to Free Jazz Music

Featuring a diverse list of musicians from all over the country, the 25th Annual Balcones Heights Jazz Festival is firing up on Friday, July 6th. Performers include Peter White, Will Donato, San Antonio’s Army and Airforce Bands, and many more. The festival is free every Friday, so you have plenty of chances to get in on the fun.

When: Fridays, July 6th, 13th, 20th, 27th (7:00 PM)

7. Honor the Great Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo was one of Mexico’s most famous painters and remains an inspiration to many artists in the world today. This two-day celebration is free and family-friendly and will showcase some of Frida’s best work as well as a market with over 70 artisan vendors, music performances, and plenty of food. 8. Stretch Into Yoga

Yoga is a great way to de-stress after a tough day at the office or lugging the kids to and from extracurricular commitments. Yoga on the Plaza is a 60-minute flow class on the Riverwalk Plaza ideal for all levels of practice that will surely leave you feeling much better than when you arrived. Since this is a free class, it’s is a no-risk opportunity to see if yoga is your thing!

9. Celebrate Bastille Day

The French School of San Antonio and the Alliance Française de San Antonio are hosting a celebration of Bastille Day 2018. Celebrate this French National Day with live music, French food, and wine! See the Facebook event for details.

10. Sign Up for Broadway Camp

Get the kids out of the house this summer and into Camp Broadway’s Original Summer Program. For kids ages 10-17, this program is designed to build their confidence both on and off the stage with singing, dancing, scene work, and bonding with other classmates.
