DIGNOWITY HILL

EXPLORE the neighborhood

Listed on the National Historic Registry of Neighborhoods, Dignowity Hill was the first exclusive residential area in San Antonio, even preceding the Historic King William neighborhood. Its location just east of Downtown San Antonio places this neighborhood less than 10 blocks from core city attractions like the Alamo, River Walk, Pearl Brewery, and St. Paul’s Square. With an incredible location and undeniably unique vibes, Dignowity Hill boasts an urban mix of residential, commercial, and community space with a flair for hospitality. Perhaps one of the best representations of this neighborhood is The Dignowity Hill Neighborhood Association, known widely as one of the most active and effective neighborhood associations in the city. The DHNA has been a huge part of the revitalization of San Antonio’s east side, cultivating a creative and energetic community that truly cares about its residents and their sense of belonging. The area’s location allows residents to enjoy extremely close access to downtown attractions, as well as local perks and novelties of all kinds. From the signature palm trees of Dignowity Park to the 19th century scrollwork of the Hays Street Bridge, Dignowity Hill is all about the details. Area amenities and perks also include the Ella Austin Community Center (which provides family, social, senior and family services to the community), the Carver Community Cultural Center, San Antonio National Cemetery, and grand views of the city skyline. Dignowity Hill is located within the San Antonio Independent School District, and students are zoned to Bowden Elementary School, Wheatley Middle School, and Fox Technical High School. Private area schools include Pickett Academy and Healy-Murphy Center High School. Due to its high elevation, proximity to downtown, and spacious lots, Dignowity Hill began as a cluster of upper-class estates in the mid-19th century. Now, over 150 years later, the area is composed of a variety of home styles and types, from beautifully restored homes to potential fixer-uppers. Several mansions still mark the area, providing ample character and plenty of stories. Homes in this neighborhood are generally priced from the mid $200,000s to mid/upper $300,000s. Families, young professionals, artists, and retirees populate this diverse community. Purchasing a home in Dignowity Hill is about more than just an investment: it’s about sitting on the front porch with neighbors, investing in your community, and participating in the famously unique Dignowity Hill Pushcart Derby.
