One of the greatest benefits of living in San Antonio is the variety of “things” to see and do. In fact, there are so many San Antonio attractions and events on any given weekend that it can seem overwhelming to choose just one. In this series all pressure is off! Ten fun things to do in San Antonio will be chosen each week to make researching for the next Friday celebration, date night, or family outing a little more simple. This week kicks off San Antonio’s Fiesta season and we’ve got all sorts of suggestions to help you find the perfect activity!

  • 1.  Celebrate Fiesta with Royalty

It’s Fiesta season! Celebrations officially began on Thursday evening with ceremonies at the Alamo. Tonight you can jump into tradition with the 68th “People’s King”, also known as El Rey Feo. This tradition is just another way that Fiesta begins every year and following the crowning, enjoy the after-party with the king himself! Food, drinks, and live music will allow this celebration to be a memorable way to kick off fiesta weekend. Admission is not open to the public for this event so snag a ticket quickly!

  • 2.  Fall in Love and Sing Along to Memphis

The Woodlawn Theatre is performing the Tony Award winning musical, Memphis. Set in the 1950s, Memphis tells the story of a DJ and singer who embark on a journey of forbidden love and attempted fame through music. With high racial tensions and the civil rights movement presence, the characters challenge society with their relationship and challenge the world through their music. The songs in this musical are bound to stick with you and the story is captivating with dynamic characters you can’t help but love.

  • 3.  Let the World Be Your Oyster

With Fiesta season comes tradition and the Oyster Bake is celebrating its 100-year anniversary! Taking place at St. Mary’s University, the event will feature over 100,000 oysters that will be served! Whether you enjoy them baked, raw, or fried, this event will definitely fill your appetite! Come and enjoy live music and a full-blown carnival for the little ones to enjoy. At the end of the evening there will be an amazing firework show to close out the night. Grab a friend because there are plenty of oysters for everyone!

  • 4.  Laugh and Live It Up

Jay Mohr is a complex guy and has many different talents. He launched his career in Jerry Maguire, has appeared in multiple TV shows and movies, regularly performs stand-up comedy, and has been featured on Saturday Night Live. Mohr is coming to the Majestic this weekend and will be showcasing his stand-up comedy with a laugh out loud performance. Comedy Central has even named him as one of the top one hundred greatest stand-up comedians of all time. Don’t miss this show over the weekend because he is only in San Antonio for a limited amount of time.

  • 5.  Find A Piece of Fiesta Art

The Fiesta Art Fair began 42 years ago and has evolved into one of San Antonio’s best art fairs that the city has seen. It showcases 120 diverse artists and their works of all different mediums. You will be exposed to paintings, photography, jewelry, ceramics, and more at this event. It’s a great place to bring kids specifically. The art fair offers children the ability to work with the professional artists so that they can create a unique masterpiece that is special to them. There is something for everyone at this event, though! Live music, Mexican food, and the beautiful grounds will undoubtedly make it a perfect way to spend your Saturday or Sunday.

  • 6.  Watch Fashion, Hand in Hand

Join Morgan’s Wonderland as they present A Night On the Runway. The Hand in Hand fashion show features students with special needs paired with a student from The Episcopal School of Texas (TMI) as they model clothes from Macy’s. This amazing event sends a message of inclusion and friendship to all. The night’s proceeds will go towards beneficial programs at Morgan’s Wonderland, an amusement center and organization that helps adolescents with special needs. Enjoy the fashion and help out a great cause!

  • 7.  Taste New Orleans and Fiesta!

New Orleans is known for its food and festive atmosphere. San Antonio is giving you a taste of New Orleans as they recreate the Cajun food, jazzy music, and an elaborate parade. You’ll feel as though you are experiencing New Orleans first hand through this event and it’s a great way to get yourself in the “fiesta” mind-set. Get ready for red beans & rice, crawfish, gumbo, and other crowd favorites. Come to enjoy the entertainment for this three-day festival and bring friends!

  • 8.  Experience the Wartburg Choir

The Wartburg Choir has performed across the entire world and is recognized as music ambassadors. Their prestige and style are internationally acclaimed and they perform sacred music, focusing on works of contemporary composers that are well-known. The choir is performing in San Antonio this Sunday as a part of their five-state tour. It’s a rare opportunity to be able to see this outstanding group and the event is free for the public.

  • 9.  Meet a Feathered Friend

It’s not every day you get to handle and see birds in San Antonio’s Botanical Garden. This Saturday, come out and meet a multitude of “feathered friend” and their bird keepers. Keepers will be present so that you can learn about the birds, their diets, and needs. The colorful birds are sure to brighten your day and the event benefits the Alamo Exhibition Bird Club. The club focuses on the well-being of birds in captivity and they hope to educate the public while allowing them a better understanding of these colorful feathered friends.

  • 10.  Exercise with a View
