25 Things to Do in San Antonio in February

One of the greatest benefits of living in San Antonio is the variety of “things” to see and do. In fact, there are so many San Antonio attractions and events on any given weekend that it can seem overwhelming to choose just one. In this series, all the pressure is off! 25 fun things to do in San Antonio will be chosen each month to make researching for the next Friday celebration, date night, or family outing a little easier. Take time to read and explore the many options for the month of February!

1. Explore the Boating World

South Texas has a variety of lakes and rivers for you to explore. The annual Boat and Travel Show at the Alamodome is the perfect place to see a wide variety of boats and travel trailers! Whether you want to look at fishing boats, ski boats, fancy RVs, or even kayaks, this event will have it all. Even if you’re not interested in buying, we recommending perusing all of the “toys” on display. Browse, get a great deal, and take the time to fish INSIDE the Alamodome (manmade pond, anyone?).

2. See An Acrobatic Pippin

The Broadway play “Pippin” has been a longtime crowd favorite. Now, The Woodlawn Theatre is performing the play with a circus twist! Acrobats will show off dazzling skills and flexibility as they bring the story and characters of Pippin to life. The storyline, centers around a young prince who accidentally murders his father...but what happens when his father is suddenly brought back to life? 3. Cast a Lantern

Lanterns on the Water is an event on the River Walk that showcases Asian culture and allows you to take time to reflect on your hopes, wishes, dreams, and loved ones. The Asian tradition of casting lanterns onto the water dates back hundreds of years. Now, you can be a part of the tradition by casting your own lantern. Personalize your lantern with provided pens, and take part in music, dancing, and the feast that will accompany the gorgeous display of dreams and light. Make time in your schedule for this wonderful event!

4. Discover a Secret Garden

The classic story “The Secret Garden” has been transformed into a musical at the CTX Live Theatre! The musical tells the tale of Mary, an orphan sent to live with her Uncle. She soon discovers the joy that earth can bring to a cold heart. This high-quality production will have you reminiscing on the beloved children’s book that inspired it. New songs and plenty of joy will fill the stage, leaving you with a warm heart and a smile on your face.

5. Learn About Nature

Our Texas landscape has so much variety to offer! You can learn more about the different plants specific to this ecological region of Texas with the Texas Native Trail Exploration. A Master Naturalist will be there to guide you through your journey, pointing out specific trees, plants, and facts about the ecosystem. The walk will teach you more about South Texas as a whole and what sort of plants are native to the land. Enjoy the beautiful topography and nature that will undoubtedly surround you at the San Antonio Botanical Garden.

6. Get a Dose of Culture

The McNay proudly offers Art_FULL Wednesdays: Food for Thought. The bi-weekly series showcases a specific food and its origins. This month features Pakistani cuisine from the San Antonio-based food truck Rickshaw Stop. Learn more about the colorful spices that fill the food with flavor and give a unique taste. Taste and experience something new! Additionally, you can check out the other events going on at the museum, such as workshops, gallery talks, films, and more. The other events are free with your museum admission ticket.

7. Listen to a Beloved Country Band

Country band Little Big Town is coming to San Antonio for the rodeo! This Grammy-winning group has been around since 1998, boasting hit songs like “Boondocks,” “Good as Gone,” and “Little White Church.” You’re bound to recognize a song or two, and the band will also perform songs from their new album “The Breaker.” While the album is set for release on February 24, fans will get an inside look at some of the songs before they even come out! Put on your boots and get ready for a fantastic country music concert.

8. See Classic Shakespeare

Calling all Shakespeare lovers! The Classic Theatre is set to perform The Tempest, a classic tale of mischief, magic, temptation, and revenge. Follow the story of Prospero and his daughter Miranda as they are banished to a deserted island. This performance is an excellent adaptation that any literature lover is sure to appreciate. The play continues until March 12, giving you plenty of time to book your ticket.

9. March It Out

Drumline Live is the new hit attraction at the Tobin Center this month! This high-energy, high-stepping style of drumline will be performed on stage, giving you the ultimate marching band experience. The students from Historically Black College and University will play a variety of marching band songs with bold beats and rhythms full of energy and emotion. This new show promises to put a bounce in your step and a smile on your face. See the members march it out with Drumline Live!

10. Plan Your Valentine’s Day Dinner

With Valentine’s Day just around the corner, it’s time to start thinking about that special date! If you’re in the market for a classic romantic dinner, we’d like to point out downtown steakhouse Bohanan’s. 11. Drop-In for Nature

Curious about Texas wildflowers? Drop by the botanical garden for a day of family fun! On February 25th, the gardens will feature a hike where you can learn about Texas wildflowers through crafts, games, and garden exploration. All of the fun is included in your admission ticket fee, allowing you to simply “drop-in” for an afternoon of activities. Discover what is in bloom now in the garden!

12. See A Country Legend Live

Country superstar and legend Willie Nelson will be performing this month at the San Antonio Rodeo! This iconic artist has over 200 albums, countless awards and Grammies, and a six-decade career. 13. Watch Astounding Acrobatics

14. Make a Difference

The annual Cupid 5K Chase will take place on February 11th! Walkers, runners, and even strollers and wheelchairs are welcome to participate in the race. All of the proceeds go to assist those with disabilities. You can help to make a difference in their lives by participating, fundraising, and supporting! This Valentine-themed event helps to make a difference in thousands of lives across the country.

15. Celebrate Fat Tuesday

Are you ready? Fat Tuesday is February 28, and we can’t think of a better way to celebrate than with a Mardi Gras party on the Riverwalk! This party truly offers up a true taste of New Orleans. BYOB is encouraged, but beer and wine will be available for purchase. The gates will open at 4:00 PM, so be sure to arrive on time and experience the full event! Music, dancing, and festivities will help to make this a Tuesday you won’t forget.

18. Listen to a Trio

A trio of siblings has an unstoppable stage presence, The Band Perry has been around since 2010. 19. Send a Love Letter

Love is in the air! What better way to get in the spirit of Valentine’s Day than sending a love letter? The Briscoe Museum hosts their annual event: Pony Express Love Letters, a movement to spread love across the city. You can drop by anytime during the 4th and 11th to write your own letter and be inspired by the poetry around you. After that, the letters will be delivered by bicycle to your love. This old-fashioned event is romantic and unique, so don’t miss out on your chance to send a good ol’ fashioned letter!

20. Take a Hike in Wilderness

Head over to Friedrich Wilderness Park on February 4th for a morning hike through the South Texas trails with a Geologist! Expert Bob Hixon will lead the hike with discussion over the native plants, limestone, and karst features in the rock. The hike requires an RSVP and $3 participation fee. This is the perfect activity to get you outside and moving. The weekend predicts sunshine and temperatures in the 70’s!

21. Have Fun at the Carnival

In case you couldn’t tell, it’s rodeo season in San Antonio! We’ve listed some of the amazing performers you can expect to see this month, but don’t forget to attend the rodeo carnival as well. As one of the largest carnivals in the US, you’ll see amazing animals, a variety of rides, and delicious carnival food (funnel cake and fried twinkies, anybody?). Stay for the actual rodeo and watch the cowboys wrangle in horses, bulls, and sheep. It’s a true Texas activity, and it only happens once a year!!

22. See The Ultimate Host...Live!

Jay Leno is widely known as the “ultimate host” of The Tonight Show. His hosting style of prime entertainment and hilarious humor keeps audiences everywhere engaged. Now, it’s your chance to see Leno up close and personal at the Majestic Theatre! He promises to keep you entertained through both conversation and comedy. Make sure that you get a ticket to see this talk show host legend while he is in town!

23. Cheer on the USA!

While rugby might not be as popular as football in the USA, we still boast many fans of this fast-paced, intense sport. You can see the USA Rugby team play against Uruguay in the first round of the Americas Rugby Championship of 2017. This is the first time the tournament has been hosted in San Antonio! Learn more about the sport and cheer on the US team as they play against Uruguay. Toyota Field is a remarkable venue, and you’ll love getting to see the action up close. Cheer on our national team!

The vintage-inspired candy store Lolli and Pops definitely requires a visit before Valentine’s Day.
